Diary, 1874-1875; 1877.

The brief diary, for the period 1874 to 1875, of sixteen-year-old Victoria R. Lodge was kept in a volume that contains a miscellany of material. There are farm accounts of her father, poetry, an essay on temperance that was copied into the volume, recipes, sketches of animals, and records of the Westchester County Horticultural Society, of which Joseph P. Lodge was a member. The records include minutes of meetings and a list of subscribers, 1842-1845. The diary contains introspective passages concerning Victoria Lodge's rebelliousness towards her mother, household chores, and her efforts as a seamstress. She wrote also of Sunday School lessons and picnics. The diary contains brief mention of a romance with Tom Eggert, and her concern that she was not a proper Christian. While training as a seamstress, she produced several pairs of pants for the town's tailor and eventually purchased a sewing machine. The volume contains a few personal accounts, 1877, of Victoria Lodge. There is also a typescript of the diary entries.
